Soft Corner

A field of worked red. One quiet centre. The corner you keep for someone.

Ask anyone who they have a soft corner for, and they will not need time to think. The name comes to them straight away. Everyone is hard somewhere. Everyone carries a day that demands the tough version of them, the one that gets things done and does not flinch. And nearly everyone keeps one place where that armour comes off, reserved for a single person who never had to ask for it.

This painting is that arrangement, laid out on canvas. The red field is the intensity of the world around us. It is built up in heavy layers, scraped and dragged and worked over until no two patches of the surface hold the light the same way. Flecks of orange and yellow burn through from below where earlier coats were never fully covered. It is a surface that has taken effort, and it does not hide it.

Then the centre gives way. A soft blush of pink, brushed loose and left unresolved, with no hard edge anywhere around it. It does not fight the red. It simply stops fighting. It is the one part of the canvas that was allowed to be gentle, and it sits right in the middle of everything that is not.

Around all of it, a bare white border, canvas left unpainted on purpose. It holds the painted field back from the edge and keeps a little distance between the soft part and the room. That is the honest version of how most of us handle it. The soft corner is not hidden, but it is not handed out either. It is framed, held slightly apart, and kept for the one person who gets past the border.

Nothing in the piece says who that person is. That is deliberate. Whoever came to mind when you read the first line is the subject of the painting, and the painting will not argue with you.

Hang it somewhere personal rather than public: a bedroom wall, a reading corner, the side of a hallway you pass every morning. At 30 x 40 cm, it is a small, close piece, made to be looked at from a step away rather than across a room.
