Monsoon Sky

Cloud on cloud on cloud. No horizon, no ground, nothing to stand on. Just the part of the sky you see when you finally look up.

Anyone who has spent a monsoon here knows this sky. Four in the afternoon, the light goes strange, and the whole ceiling of the day fills up — navy pushing in at the edges, cobalt underneath it, violet where the two argue, and small breaks of white where the sun is still getting through. It lasts about twenty minutes and then it rains. This painting is those twenty minutes.

Every cloud is a single curled stroke. The paint went on thick and was turned once, so each mark keeps its own ridge and shadow instead of blending into the next one. That is why the surface reads as volume rather than pattern: the blues sit physically higher than the violets, and the whole canvas changes as the light moves across the room. Standing to one side of it is a different painting from standing square in front of it.

The violet does the quiet work. It sits between the dark blues and the pale ones and stops the piece from tipping into a storm. Take it out and this would be weather. Leave it in and it stays a sky you would be happy to sit under.

The white is not paint. It is bare canvas, left alone in a dozen places and never covered, which is what keeps the density from becoming heavy. The painting is packed right to the edges and still breathes.

At 30 x 30 cm it is a close piece rather than a statement wall. It works above a bedside table, on a shelf, in a small study, or in a group of three with other squares. Hang it where the light changes through the day and it will not be the same painting twice.
